CHERRY TREE & SPRING
“Desire is neither masculine nor feminine, because the primary impulse of desire is to be other… And here lies the reason - the maddening reason - why anything (and not simply anybody) is capable of provoking desire.”
Annie Le Brun
A research based project in anthropology and the neuroplasticity of the brain with regards to the sexual “instinct”, the only instinct that has broken free from its core purpose - reproduction.
The photographs are constructed using a 1970s, 35mm porn film, from an abandoned cinema in Cyprus. The complexity and factors underlying the research were reflected in the photography process. The film reel was restored, projected at a small cinema, captured digitally and then montaged together with film stills that I manipulated. The title of the project is inspired by Pablo Neruda’s poem 'Every Day You Play’.
