Description of Project

A description of the process and aims of the project, outlining its different aspects and collaborators.

OVERVIEW:

I am focusing on underwater sound pollution and the lack of environmental consciousness when it comes to the expansion and development of Lemesos, my hometown. The project will be presented in 2 forms - as an article accompanied and as sensory installation at Synergeio.

Underwater sound pollution is an increasingly recognised anthropogenic stressor. It affects underwater ecosystems and migratory species by disrupting their physiology and behaviour. Our present day society focuses on image and consequently does not prioritise "invisible" factors such as noise, as well as giving less attention to pollutants that do not directly affect humans.

In this project I want to reveal the richness of underwater life and how much of it is reliant on sound to survive. Through critical analysis and research of the issues listed below, I will point out the factors that cause underwater sound pollution, focusing and giving examples from my hometown and how it can be prevented.

  • construction and development of the shoreline with huge structures and skyscrapers

  • Lax tax laws on registered vessels and vessel owning companies (increase of marine traffic)

  • Drilling for gas in Cyprus waters

  • Deep Sea Mining

I am collaborating with marine biologists from Enalia Physis and MerLab, as well as architects and other specialists so I can present the problems as well as the steps and solutions we can take in, in order to create a better environment for all. On the second day of the installation there will be an open talk where solutions can be discussed. I hold the firm belief that if individuals work together we can create solutions to any problems using our personal experience and professional skills.

The project will be presented on the 9th & 10th December 2024.

ACCESSIBILITY & LAYOUT:

There are few borders in the sea  and sound can travel fast and long distances in water, which is why entire relationships are created and maintained because of sound. Through underwater visuals and soundscapes I want to create a sense of the world underwater.

There will be a specialised guide on both days assisting me in introducing the project before people enter the apace, as well as guiding anyone who needs extra help in locating the various sections of the installation.

For the installation, a room will be lit with ceiling projections showing an edited clip of Cyprus and Lemesos from underwater. There will be a soundscape of underwater sounds accompanying the video showcasing the diverse world we do not usually have access to. Both the video and the audio will be on loop and people can enter and leave the space when they wish. The room will be arranged so that people have the choice to sit or lie down on the floor (on pillows) and there will be a section specifically for wheelchair users and 2 headphone sets for the blind who want to hear the audio description of the video. A textured wall, metaphorically describing the disturbance of underwater sea-life and ecosystems will be an extra sensory experience focusing on touch.

ARTICLE & OPEN TALK:

A QR code of the article will be available and dotted around the installation so that you can read it in English or Greek. I will have the article translated in English because Lemesos is a very international city and accessibility is vital in creating a closer community and positive changes. It will also be available as audio, in both languages via specific apps. The article will be accompanied by a clip with with the same audiovisuals used in the installation. At this point of the project, I am aiming for the article to be circulated before the installation is up on the 9th of December.

During the open talk there will be a sign language interpreter.

The talk will be held in English if the crowd is international.

DETAILS OF THE SUPPORTING ORGANISATIONS:

It was organised for the first time in 2022 from our NGO with the support of the deputy ministry of Cyprus and some productions were funded by the European funding Program Perform Europe. This year, 2024 the festival willl be organised for the second time with the support from the local deputy of Ministry of Culture.
